About
“When I make, each piece carries the stillness and focus of the quiet space in which it was made.”
Over the past decade, Sarah Hudson’s creative focus has centred on the lesser-known Cycladic islands of Greece.
A visit in her late twenties – to a Monastery on the outskirts of Athens – became a profound influence, one she has since returned to with focus and intention. Field notes gathered during extended journeys, solo hikes across ancient paths, and artist residencies now form the foundation of her layered, narrative-based work, reflecting deep engagement and ongoing commitment.
Her practice is guided by focus and stillness – qualities reflected in fined crafted works shaped by observation of nature. Hudson’s studio, surrounded by native Moonah trees on the Victoria’s coast, is both sanctuary and sketchbook. Through the window, a lone olive tree – a symbol of Greek culture – anchors her connection to place. Inside, test pieces, studies, visual cues, and gathered fragments of Greece gently build the evolving language of her work.
Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Monash University, she specialised in Metals, Jewellery and Ceramics, receiving a Commendation for Excellence. Upon graduation, she was recognised with an ArtStart Grant from the Australia Council for the Arts.
Drawing on her design and fine art background, Hudson works across disciplines including ceramics, silversmithing, botanical printing, drawing, photography and writing. Her unique visual language – quiet portraits – deeply felt – are an intuitive response to place.
A two-time recipient of the prestigious Itami Prize at the Itami International Craft Exhibition in Japan, she has also been a finalist in respected Australian ceramics awards. Her work has appeared in multiple editorial features (inlcuding Belle and Vogue Living) and professional publications, and is recognised both nationally and internationally.
Hudson is currently developing her first book, “Re-journey: The Cyclades as seen by an Artist” which weaves together her words, images, and artworks. Much like the landscapes she walks, each page is a layered record and quiet invitation – to see through the eyes of an artist, and to find beauty in the quietest of moments.
