Arts Residency in Greece | 2024
Central to my practice; my methods present a meditative approach that is echoed in artworks of timeless beauty.
Prior to arriving on Paros to attend the Cycladic Arts Residency, I travelled for two months, visiting 9 smaller Cycladic islands. I hiked, explored and photographed scenes from remote paths, villages and museums; all while collecting precious keepsakes. I wrapped specimens of rocks into small parcels and pressed flora clippings carefully between books; as a way of documentation.
The residency gave me dedicated time to create and explore different techniques to express the inspiration and beauty I experienced. My artworks include a documented stone specimen artwork/display, print impressions of flora and watercolours. A series of handmade postcards captured the essence of the islands’ natural flora and narrated stories from my travels. Also working with the flora clippings, I transferred their pigment onto an installation of linen flags. Upon each unique flag, the islands natural beauty and flora came to life as it danced in the breeze.
Upon returning home, I continue working towards a creative expression of the beauty of the Cyclades. I’ve captured and documented much of the landscape, gathering a wealth of reference and material and with many new ideas, I look forward to creating a new body of work. I lovingly re-explore my collected items, creating artworks that embed elements of the Cycladic flora and landscape.
The residency was a joyful and humbling experience as I immersed myself in a place and environment that inspires me.
